Here’s How to Make Hibiscus Tea
I’ve already given you a hint about the flexibility of hibiscus tea and this also applies to how you brew it. There are different way to brew this amazing flower to derive certain certain benefits, I will reveal all the recipes to you below;
Let’s start with the basic and probably the easiest method (you don’t need to worry, all the recipes are actually easy!)
Ingredients:
- 2 cups fresh hibiscus flowers or ½ cup dried hibiscus flowers.
- 8 cups water
- ¼ cup honey add more if you like your tea sweater
- 3 tablespoons Fresh Lime Juice
- If using fresh hibiscus flowers, remove the calyx or the green part at the base of the flower to which the stem is attached. You can also remove the pistil which is the thin thread-like tube in the middle of the flower which has pollen attached to it or you can choose to keep it! You don’t need to do this if you are using dried flowers.
- Bring the hibiscus flowers and water to a boil in a large pot. Once the water starts boiling, switch off the flame and cover the vessel. At this point, you can also add other herbs or add basil, lemongrass, lemon zest, etc. Let the tea steep for 15-20 minutes. Mix in the honey and lime juice until completely combined. Strain the tea.
- You can either serve hibiscus tea warm or you can chill it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. Either way, it tastes delicious!
Spice up Your Hibiscus Tea With Add-ins
Here are just a few ideas to spice up your hibiscus tea for a more rewarding flavor.
Herbs: lemongrass, mint leaves, basil, rosemary, and lemon balm pair well with the agua de Jamaica.
Citrus: there are several ways to introduce citrus into the hibiscus tea recipe. You can add a splash of lemon juice or lime juice before serving or infuse the drink with more flavor with the zest/peel of lemon, lime, or orange.
Whole spices: adding a cinnamon stick or two is one of my favorite additions to this roselle tea. However, you could also experiment with allspice berries, cardamom, cloves, fennel seeds, or saffron.
Ginger: add a few slices of fresh ginger to infuse it with extra zing.
Hibiscus pineapple tea: follow this method for pineapple skin tea, adding the flowers in the last 10 minutes of steeping time.
Florals: adding a small amount of orange blossom water, rosewater, lavender, or rosehip will increase the floral notes.
Fruit: a very easy way to increase the flavor is with the addition of fruit, either in muddled form or as juice. Options include a mango hibiscus tea recipe, raspberry hibiscus tea, strawberry, peach, cranberry, blueberries, quince, lychee, tamarind, pineapple, watermelon, etc.

How to Make Hibiscus Tea from Flowers
You have the hibiscus flowers in your garden and you’re willing to make a tea from it, let me show you how. It may sound complicated but it’s not, you can trust us on that. The recipe for you is here:
- Step 1. Harvest flowers- Harvest 5-6 fresh hibiscus flowers from the plant. The matured flowers will show signs of curling at the edges and small changes in color from red to dark! You can make about 2 to 3 cups of tea from these flowers.
- Step 2. Clean the flowers- First remove any leaves, stem, and seed pods from the flowers. Separate the petals and keep them aside.
- Step 3. Add other ingredients- You can add 4 to 5 teaspoons of honey. A small piece of Cinnamon stick can be added to it! Add a small piece of dried Ginger. 2 to 3 black peppercorns can be added! A piece of clove can give it a taste too!
- Step 4. Crush ingredients to powder- Take all the ingredients like cinnamon, dried ginger, Black peppercorns, and clove in a mortar and lightly crush them.
- Step 5. Boil Hibiscus Petals- Rinse the hibiscus petals in clean water and transfer them to a pot for boiling. Add enough water for making 2 to 3 cups of tea. Do not add too much water. Add crushed ingredients to water and start boiling.
- Step 6. Filter the Hibiscus Tea- Once the water starts boiling, keep it on the stove for another 5-6 minutes. You need to boil the petals more than that. Within this time all essence from the flowers will get into the boiling water and the petals will change the light in color. Using a tea filter, filter out the tea and discard the remains.
- Step 7. Add honey and serve- Transfer the hot tea to serving glasses. Add honey to each glass of tea and mix it well. Garnish each glass with fresh mint leaves and serve hot. Enjoy your Hibiscus Tea made from fresh flowers with Honey.
Equipment Needed for Brewing
When brewing hibiscus tea, it’s essential to have the right equipment on hand to ensure that you get the perfect cup every time. Here are the essential pieces of equipment that you’ll need:
-
Tea Kettle: A tea kettle is a must-have when brewing hibiscus tea. Choose a kettle that is easy to use and pours well without spilling. Look for a kettle with a narrow spout that allows you to control the flow of water as you pour it over the tea leaves or tea bag.
-
Strainer: You’ll need a strainer to remove the tea leaves or tea bag from the hot water once the tea has finished steeping. A fine-mesh strainer is best, as it will catch even the smallest tea leaves and prevent them from ending up in your cup.
-
Tea Spoon: A tea spoon is a handy tool to have on hand when measuring out your hibiscus tea leaves. Use a spoon that is the right size for your cup or pot, and be sure to measure out the correct amount of tea for the amount of water you’re using.
-
Tea Cup or Teapot: The vessel you choose to brew your hibiscus tea in is up to you. You can use a tea cup for a single serving, or a teapot if you’re brewing a larger batch. Choose a cup or pot that is heat-resistant and easy to handle.
Optional Equipment:
-
Infuser: An infuser is a great tool to have on hand if you’re using loose-leaf hibiscus tea. It allows you to steep the tea leaves without having them floating freely in the water. Simply place the tea leaves in the infuser, and then place the infuser in the hot water.
-
Tea Pot: A teapot is a great option if you’re brewing hibiscus tea for a group of people or if you want to make a larger batch. Choose a teapot that is easy to pour and has a lid to keep the tea warm while it’s steeping.
By having the right equipment on hand, you can ensure that your hibiscus tea is brewed to perfection every time. With these tools, you’ll be able to enjoy a delicious and healthy cup of hibiscus tea whenever you want.
